I'm gonna be honest, this isn’t really a new language. I’d rather call it a new language within the digital medium. David Salle and others, like some of Wangechi Mutu’s portraits, have been doing similar things on canvas for the past 30 years. And I don’t say that to downplay what’s happening in the avant-gay scene; I’m actually super excited about it, and I love it. It’s just not a new language. What is new, is doing this in the digital medium, that opens doors that haven’t been opened before.

That's well said. But this self-referential system you mention also existed before the internet. But it was a feedback loop from what happened on a canvas or to the system of painting and images in the physical world. It's not the same, but it rhymes.
